The largest gathering of cranes anywhere in the world happens in Nebraska every year! Approximately 450,000 sandhill cranes (80% of world population) migrate through central Nebraska on their way to breeding grounds in Canada and Alaska. Fossil records indicate that this has been happening for 9 million years.
